Arturia has given the “spontaneous algorithmic synthesizer” MiniFreak another firmware update. The main new feature in version 4.0.0 is that the synthesizer becomes a vocoder.

To install the update, interested parties must first update the virtual MiniFreak V on the computer to version 4.0.1 – fortunately, the software even offers the update itself at startup. Once the update is complete, the hardware synthesizer can also be updated with firmware 4.0.0.

Arturia MiniFreak becomes a vocoder

New functions added to the effects section are “Vocoder Ext IN” and “Vocoder Self” with four possible presets: Clean, Vintage, Narrow and Gated. With a connected microphone, they transform spoken words or vocals into the familiar vocoder sounds. The audio section has been given the new “Input Mode” and “Input Gain” settings. Another improvement is that the “Audio In” engine now supports “Soft Clip” and wavefolding for gain.

The maximum preset volume gain has been increased to +16 dB maximum, up from +6 dB previously. Arturia also mentions an error correction for the update. Notes can now be recorded if REC is activated before starting the sequencer with an external clock.

New hardware version

The new firmware and manuals can be found on Arturia’s download page under “Arturia MiniFreak Vocoder”. This is an additional hardware version that comes in a stylish white color and includes a microphone with stand. As is usual with special editions, there is of course a surcharge for this – the device is available in stores from around 630 euros.

Arturia maintains the devices in an exemplary manner with updates and is constantly adding new functions. Shortly before Christmas, the company surprised owners of the MiniFreak with the firmware update 3.0. It included the new function of granular synthesis, which allows the samples of the sample engine to be processed in an interesting way.
